MU-01: Ad Lib / Sound Blaster The music and programs in this section require either the Ad Lib or the Sound Blaster or compatible music cards. See Retail Products for Ad Lib compatible music cards from PsL, as well as other music cards and multimedia systems. The Ad Lib card comes with software for playing the ROL (music) files on these disks. "Compatible" cards may not include such software, in which case you will need PsL's disk #9011, "Ad Lib Compatible Start-Up Disk." It has all the software you need to play ROL files, plus a sampling of ROL files to play. ------------------------ 7540/1967 AdLib Music #1 Small Programs Disk ------------------------ Music files: Stand by Me, Get Ready, Castle in the Clouds, Kokomo, The Entertainer, Manic Monday, Star Trek II theme, Good King Wenceslas, Cult of, Bungle in the Jungle, Cross-Eyed Mary, Bach's Variations of a Theme, Theme from Taxi, Love Theme from St. Elmo's Fire, Brahms, I Dreamed a Dream, At the End of the Day, Modern Skyscrapers, Mull of Kintyre and others. Adlib1 Bay, Michael $0 contains music composed on the Ad-Lib Personal Music System and instrument files necessary to play the music. This method of entering music could be easier for people who are not great at reading music and want to transcribe sheet music into Ad Lib files. The 90+k documentation file even gives instructions on how to read music. MoreIns is a collection of 250 different instrument files for Ad Lib. PlayROL Harton, Tracy play Adlib's ROL files from DOS, BATch files, etc. Seems to have a bug in playing slurs (pitch bends). PlayMenu (PLAYMNU) Beeler, Bill $0 is a menuing utility to be used in conjunction with PLAYROL. Music, Voice & Pictures 1.0 (MVPSHAR) Data Assist, Inc. $35 is a command language for creating graphics slide-shows with music on Ad Lib and Sound Blaster cards. It provides a selection box for you to choose songs you wish to play, and allows you to attach a 40 character description to songs. A batch file is included that will automatically load the SBFMDRV and run the PLAY2 program. Doctor is a Sound Blaster VOC file with Star Trek's Doctor McCoy saying "I'm a doctor, not..." with a reply from Scotty. Sound Blaster Digest #6 (SBDIGST) is issue 6 of a newsletter for Sound Blaster enthusiasts. Menu-PM McGowan, Patrick $0 is a music file menu and playing programs for Ad Lib and Sound Blaster. Sbank 1.06 JO'Connell, Jamie $10 manages SoundBlaster and Adlib instrument files and sound banks. It will translate between .INS, .SBI, .BNK, and .IBK files. It will also report instrument names stored in bank files and display musical parameters contained in the instrument definitions. Music Files on this disk: White Room (SoundBlaster CMF file), Bach's Brandenburg Concerto #5, the Beatles' "Obladi, Oblada", the Archies' "Sugar, Sugar", and Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. Talking Music Box 3.0a (MUSICBX) Culbertson, Dave $5 is a CMF player. It announces the title of each song and plays it automatically until all of the songs in the directory have been played. Brahams, Mendelsshon & Schumann Childs, Roy V. $0 #20139 [2 disks] contains the organ works of these composers in AdLib ROL format. Instrument files are included to help simulate the sound of a pipe organ. Buxtehude Organ Music Childs, Roy V. $0 #20049 [5 disks] is the music of Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) in ROL file format for Ad Lib compatible sound cards. --------------------- 3785 Sound Blaster #1 Small Programs Disk --------------------- MicPaint 1.0 (MICPAIN) Walsh, Craig M. $0 produces graphics from sounds it picks up on the ADC port. Requires VGA and a sound card with an addressable ADC port. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #18041.) SBKTimbre 2.51 (SBKTMBR) O'Connell, Jamie $25 lets you create and modify instrument sounds for Sound Blaster and Ad Lib compatible sound cards. This is an excellent program, better than Ad Lib's own Instrument Maker. Requires EGA/VGA and, we assume, some music composition software that uses the resulting instrument files. MIDI and Cakewalk's IBK are also supported. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #8949.) Sound Blaster Music Files (CMF-FIL) Beatles, Deuce Coupe, Entertainer, ET, Fun Fun Fun, I Beg Your Pardon, IDoIt4U, I Get Around, Magnificent, Muppets, You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Shut It Down, Streets of London, St. Elsewhere, Surfin' USA, Taxman, Yesterday, Best of My Love (BOML) Sound Blaster VOC Files: ------------------------ Be right back, Beam Me Up, Working, Charge!, Phasers 646SBI contains 646 SBI instrument files needed to convert Ad Lib ROL files to Sound Blaster CMF files. AdjVox 1.0 Winsor, Daniel $0 adjusts the playback speed of VOC files. ProMod 1.1 Lopez, David and Trigo, Angel $0 plays stereo Amiga MOD files on a SoundBlaster Pro card. IFF2VOC 1.0 Bachus, Kevin S. $0 converts Amiga sound files to SoundBlaster format. Silly String 1.11 (SILLYST) Sound Applications $5 is a graphical sound show. It translates sounds from the microphone on your Sound Blaster to a graphics display. The Best of My Love (BOML) Contains three versions of the CMS song, The Best of My Love by the Eagles. One of the CMS files is Sing-a-long compatible. Sun2Voc 1.0 Bachus, Kevin S. $? converts files from Sun audio (.au) file format to Sound Blaster-compatible VOC format without the need for any additional modifications to the file. Wow 2.01 Suhr, Jan Ole $0 is a graphical Amiga MOD player for use with Sound Blaster compatible cards. Features include control of all four channels, an oscilloscope that beats to the music, and ability to view PCX picture files when playing a MOD. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #3785 -------------------------------- Sound Takessian, Alex $0 #2388 is primarily for playing music files from the Amiga, Mac and Atari through the IBM's internal speaker. It will also play Sound Blaster digitized files, and, we discovered, Sound Blaster will play most/all of these sound files after using SB's VOCHDR to put the proper header info on them. Sound files on other machines are used to liven up the system. Sounds clips on a Mac can actually be substituted for system beeps, so that instead of hearing "Beep" when you type something wrong, you can hear, for example, HAL saying "I'm sorry Dave; I just can't do that." Naturally, the PC's internal speaker is no match for the sound quality of the Sound Blaster, and a few of the files may not sound good at all on the PC. In those few cases, we left them on the disks because they sound good with Sound Blaster. In addition to the SOUND program, this disk (#2388) contains the following sound files: Belch-1, BigBuzz, Biscuit, GQ, MakMyDay, Morning, Scotty, and Yell. We have added several disks of sounds from our Mac library, and will add more in the future. ------------------- 7232/2389 Sounds #1 Small Programs Disk ------------------- Note: These sounds, which are mainly clips from movies and TV shows, can be played through the PC's speakers. Their main use is for livening up batch files. They can also be played through the Sound Blaster, which increases the quality of the sound many times over. VoutBoot 2.0 Meltzer, David $5 will randomly select one of your digitized sound files and play it through the Sound Blaster. STrek2 are sound effects from Star Trek. Voc_Show (VOCSHOW) Moran, Tom $0 will play Sound Blaster VOC files on a PC speaker without Sound Blaster. Dirty Harry's "C'mon. Make my day." sound clip is included. Compoz Coon, John M. $20 #3845 allows you to compose and playback multi-voice musical scores for the Sound Blaster. Up to nine voices are programable with any of sixteen instruments from the built in instrument cache or imported from your directory of SBI files. Notes can be input either by mouse or keyboard over a seven octave range. Sharps, flats and naturals are supported, as are dotted and tied notes. Several sample music files are included. 640K and the Sound Blaster software driver required. Drum Blaster Epic MegaGames ASP $15-$30 #4433 turns your PC into a professional sounding drum pad with 40 killer digitized drum and sound effects at your command. You can tap out rhythms by pressing the keys, and it can also play CMF music files in the background. A synthesizer mode turns the top row of letter keys into a music keyboard. An amusing animated drummer and keyboard player are displayed at the top of the screen. Several sample music files are included. While this will work in a limited capacity on a regular PC speaker, a Sound Blaster compatible card is highly recommended. Keyboard Works of Sweelinck Childs, Roy V. $0 #7611-7612/3936 [5 disks] (MU-01) is a collection of 70 pieces of music from Baroque composer, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. This is a beautifully done set of organ arrangements on five disks. Instrument files are included. Requires an Ad Lib compatible card, such as the AD card, Thunderboard, Sound Blaster, PAS, etc. MIDI to AdLib Conversions Patch Panel Software $0 #3116 is a collection of 49 Ad Lib music files that have been converted from MIDI files. The set, which unarchives to over 800k, is almost entirely classical with some Christmas music. The arrangements are pretty extensive, for the most part, with several of the ROL files being over 50k, but the piano was the only instrument used (easily changed, for those with Visual Composer) and no volume variations are included - everything is at 1.0 all the way. A utility to convert MIDI-to-ROL is available from Patch Panel Software. Musician I DigiMus Ky $25-$50 #3117 allows you to write music for/with the Sound Blaster (or Ad Lib card, it appears) using a graphical notes-on-a-staff approach from either the computer keyboard or a MIDI keyboard through the Sound Blaster MIDI Connector Box or from a graphical keyboard that appears in a corner of the screen. The program's features are very impressive, but the documentation is sketchy. Also, the data files are not compatible with Ad Lib ROL format, so the two cannot be interchanged. PlayZip McKee, Rob & Livingston, David $15 #3660 lets you keep ROL, CMS and CMF files compressed into Zip files and play them without having to manually dearchive them first. Features include the ability to modify and create sounds; mixing and oversampling; special effects such as echo, filter, and waveform reversal; infinite zoom and vertical display scale control; built-in sound generators with wide frequency range; adjustable pitch control; mouse support; and a sound level meter. Requires 720k disk or better, 512k, and a Sound Blaster Card. Speech Digitizer Jones, Alan D. $0 #1439 contains a schematic and parts list for building a speech digitizer, along with programs to record and play back, including assembler source code, and an explanation of the theory involved. A sample recording of "Daisy" (a.k.a.: HAL's theme song from the movie "2001") demonstrates the fidelity that can be expected. The sound is noisy, but very distinct and natural sounding. Digitized Sounds #1-3 $0 #7081/2558 [3 disks] is a collection of digitized sounds for SoundBlaster. Disk #1 has Beep, FeelGood, GameOver, GoodGod, Hallelu, Hi, MakeMe, Meant-To, and MGun. Sound2 contains Mother, Now-What, Pee-Wee, Richo, Spam, TakeMe, and Vulcan. Sound3 has Belch, Gong, MacPuke, WoobWoob, and Yabba. They may also be played on the PC's speaker via SOUND (#2388). The sounds are mainly intended for adding a little personality to your home computer's batch files. Sputter Cousins, Adrienne $25 #3316 is a set of programs that allow you to manage and play back many different types of digitized sound files on a variety of different devices. All conversions are handled automatically, regardless of the type of device used to create the sound file. It will also play ROL files on Ad Lib compatible devices and CMF files on the Sound Blaster. Sputter allows you to attach digitized sound files to events on your PC such as Program Execution, File access, Disk access, Alarm clock settings and replacing the original beep sound. Support is provided for the PC internal speaker, Speech Thing, Voice Master, Sound Master, Sound Blaster, AdLib Music Card, Disney Sound Source and any other Digital to Analog Converter. Also included is a complete text-to-speech package that provides interchangeable voice files and complete user control over pronunciation and inflection. This is a very comprehensive sound package, and includes enhanced support for DESQview. A hard disk or high density floppy is required. The sounds are extremely impressive because the Amiga software uses sampled sounds rather than synthesized ones. It even allows you to have voices. Requires EGA/VGA and 640K memory. VOC Thing 1.2 Douglas, Melvin $9 #4871 lets you record and play digitized .VOC files on a Sound Blaster compatible card. You can create a playlist of up to 1000 files, save multiple sessions to disk, control the sample rate, record up to 30 seconds, play .VOC files from a compressed .ZIP file, and much more. Several sample sound files are included. Requires 528K and CGA or better video. Wurlitzer Jukebox Player JP Photo Innovations $25 #3317 will allow you to select and play several songs, sounds, or a combination of both, one right after the other or one at a time.
